Get festive with this fun turkey windsock craft! If you’re like me and like to craft, you probably will have all the materials you need on hand, and if not, improvise! That’s exactly what we did. Rummaging through our craft bins, I was able to collect the following materials:
Materials Needed
- Toilet paper roll or paper towel roll
- Construction paper (or markers/paint/crayons)
- Googly eyes (or markers)
- Feathers (we used construction paper)
- Streamers (or ribbon or nothing!)
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- Hole punch
How to Make Your Turkey Windsock
Step 1: Color your roll
A toilet paper roll is the perfect size, but if you only have a paper towel roll, cut it in half. Take some brown construction paper, measure the size by wrapping the paper around the roll and then cut the paper to size. Once paper is cut, glue or tape it to the roll. If you do not have brown construction paper, you can use paint, markers, or crayons to color the roll brown.
Step 2: Attach eyes, beak, and feathers
Using glue or tape, adhere your googly eyes. To add a beak, cut a small orange triangle from construction paper and glue or tape on. No paper, no problem; color it with your paint, markers, or crayons. Last attachment are the feathers. You will want to glue these on the inside of the roll behind the eyes. And if you couldn’t find feathers, cut construction paper into an elongated teardrop shape, and on both sides cut little slits from top to bottom, creating a feather look!
Step 3: Make it a windsock
On the bottom of the toilet paper/paper towel roll, attach pieces of streamers. Cut streamers at a length you like, we did about 12-15 inches. We only did three pieces per windsock, but you can add as many or as little as you like. Add glue or tape to the end of the streamers and attach to the inside of the bottom of the roll. If you do not have streamers on hand, ribbon will work just as well.
Step 4: Add string to hang
Once your turkey is created, now you need to add string to let it hang and blow in the wind. Put two holes in the top of the turkey using your hole punch, cut your string about 12-15 inches and tie both ends into the holes at the top of the turkey. All that’s left to do is hang it and enjoy!
Step 5: Hang and Enjoy!
Find a spot to hang your turkey windsock and enjoy watching it blow in the wind.
Crafting is a fun way to enjoy holidays with your family. While crafting, take the time to talk to your family about what Thanksgiving means, why you celebrate, and what you are thankful for. We hope you enjoy this craft with your family, as much as we did. Happy Thanksgiving!
