Ah, the magic of the Elf on the Shelf—an adorable tradition that brings extra joy (and sometimes stress) to our holiday season. At first, it’s so fun to wake up each morning and search for where our little elf has moved to, but as the days pass, that excitement can quickly turn into a bit of a brain freeze. We’ve all been there, right? The first few days are full of creativity—elves hanging from chandeliers, making snow angels in flour, and maybe even getting into a bit of harmless mischief. But now, here we are, approaching day 8 (or maybe even 10) of Elf watch, and we’re starting to run out of ideas.
Don’t worry! You’re not alone. Sometimes, the most difficult part is keeping up with the magic as the month goes on. To help, I’ve compiled a few fun and simple Elf ideas that’ll spark your creativity. Plus, I’d love to hear your ideas too!
1. The Elf Gets Crafty
Get your elf into some creative activities. Maybe they’re making paper snowflakes, drawing pictures for your kids, or even doing a mini craft project with beads or stickers. This one works especially well if you have a little crafty setup ready to go.
2. Elf in the Candy Jar
Who doesn’t love a sweet surprise? Hide your elf inside a jar or bowl full of candy, maybe even with a few wrapped treats in their arms. It’s a great way to tie in a surprise gift and make the morning extra sweet.
3. Paper Towel Roll Slide
Have your elf take a ride on a makeshift slide made from a paper towel roll! Set up the roll at the top of the stairs or a countertop and place the elf at the top with a few fun toys or other accessories. It’s an easy setup that’s sure to get some laughs.
4. Spaghetti Mess
If your elf is feeling a bit cheeky, they might “cook” up a mess in the kitchen. Arrange some cooked spaghetti (or yarn) on the counter and have the elf tangled up in it. You can even add a toy fork or spoon for a funny effect!
5. DIY Elf Notes
Sometimes it’s not about where the elf is, but what they’ve written. Place a little note from the elf to your kids, encouraging them to keep being kind or sharing a little joke or riddle. This adds a personal touch to the tradition.
6. Elves on a Swing
If you’ve got a little bit of twine, string, or ribbon lying around, you can create an adorable mini swing for your elf. Hang it from a chandelier, door handle, or even the Christmas tree! It’s a cute, simple, and slightly interactive display that the kids will enjoy.
7. Elf Doing Yoga or Fitness
This one’s fun and can be a great way to bring in some healthy habits, even during the holidays! Arrange your elf in a yoga pose (downward dog, tree pose, etc.) or have them “workout” with tiny weights or a resistance band.
8. Elves on the Run
For a simple yet fun setup, have your elf “run away” for a day. Place them near a window or even on a bookshelf with a little backpack or suitcase, as if they’re about to go on a mini adventure. Your kids will get a kick out of wondering where the elf is headed next!
9. Elf’s Balloon Ride
Give your elf a mini adventure with a balloon ride! Simply blow up a small balloon (or a few) and attach them to your elf with some string. You can hang the balloon from the ceiling or place the elf holding onto the string as if they’re floating through the air. It’s a whimsical and fun scene that will leave your kids in awe!
10. The Classic Toilet Paper Roll
Maybe it’s simple, but it works every time! Have your elf unroll a whole toilet paper roll around the bathroom or down the stairs. Bonus points if the elf is caught in the middle of the mess!
11. Elves Acting Like Snowmen with Toilet Paper Rolls
For an easy and adorable setup, turn your elves into little snowmen! Simply stack a few toilet paper rolls to create the “bodies” of your snowmen. Use a marker to draw simple faces and buttons on each roll—quick, easy, and charming. Then, place your elves inside the rolls as if they’re part of the snowman scene. You can even add a little scarf or tiny accessories to make them look even more festive. It’s a cute, low-effort way to create a winter wonderland scene that will bring smiles without taking up too much time!
