Easy Pinecone Bird Feeders: A Simple Nature Craft for Kids

Looking for a quick and easy outdoor activity to do with your kids? This DIY pinecone bird feeder craft is perfect for little hands and curious minds. Not only is it a fun and simple project, but it’s also a great way to teach kids about nature and help support local wildlife. Plus, it uses just a few supplies you probably already have at home!

What You’ll Need:

  • Pinecones (the more open, the better)
  • Peanut butter (or a nut-free alternative like sunflower seed butter)
  • Bird seed
  • Twine or string
  • Butter knife or spoon
  • Paper plate or shallow tray (for easy cleanup)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prep the Pinecones:
Make sure your pinecones are clean and dry. If they’ve been collected outside, give them a little shake to remove any dirt or bugs. Tie a piece of twine securely around the top of each pinecone—this will be your hanger.
  2. Spread the Peanut Butter:
Use a butter knife or spoon to spread peanut butter all over the pinecone. Try to get it in all the little nooks and crannies—this is what the bird seed will stick to. This part is great for kids and a little messy (in the best way).
  3. Roll in Bird Seed:
Pour bird seed onto a paper plate or into a shallow tray. Roll the peanut butter-covered pinecone in the bird seed until it’s completely coated. Press lightly to make sure the seed sticks.
  4. Hang and Enjoy:
Find a good spot outside to hang your bird feeder—somewhere visible from a window is perfect so kids can watch visiting birds. Hang from a tree branch, porch, or balcony railing.

Extra Tips:

  • If you don’t have pinecones, empty toilet paper rolls make a great substitute.
  • Use a bird seed mix that attracts birds in your area—this is a great opportunity to talk to your kids about local species!
  • Make a few and gift them to neighbors or grandparents for a sweet handmade surprise.

This craft is more than just fun—it encourages outdoor time, helps develop fine motor skills, and sparks curiosity about the natural world. Plus, it gives your family a front-row seat to some feathered friends all season long.
